In this unit, students will be reading and writing poetry while learning to make appropriate comments on other authors' work. They will learn to read and write several types of poetry and will be able to use important aspects of poetry and writing such as personification, similes, metaphors, rhyme, etc. Two classes will be covering the same unit simultaneously. Each student in both classes will create a poetry folder that he or she will use as a portfolio for his or her writing. The students will not write their names on their folders; instead, each student will be assigned a number 1-20. The students will then be paired based on their numbers. For example, student number one in Class A will be paired with student number one in Class B. Throughout the unit, students will be swapping folders with their pal. One day the students will write their own poetry, and the next day the students will comment on the poetry of their pals. At the end of the unit, the students will reveal themselves to their poetry pal.
This unit includes daily lessons for two weeks, including any needed examples of poetry. It also includes a unit test.
