In this unit, students will read poetry, study poetic techniques (including free verse, onomatopoeia, form, rhythm, simile, and symbol), and compose their own original poetry. The poems are designed to be biography poems; their finished work can be used as prewriting for a biography essay, or it can be a stand-alone unit .
Oftentimes, my students have been apprehensive about reading and writing poetry. They tend to think it is a big, nebulous “thing” that is difficult to understand and impossible to write. I created this unit to expose them to beautiful poetry composed by amazing poets, scaffold their own writing of poetry, and encourage them to feel successful in their understanding of poetry!
This unit typically takes a week, of course, it can be tailored to meet your students' needs.
