Assess vocabulary knowledge with this short quiz!
This is a short (10-question), multiple-choice poetry quiz. It is relatively easy, and could be used as a pre- or post-assessment. Vocabulary assessed are alliteration, diction, figurative language (simile & imagery), repetition, rhyme, tone, and theme. Students are asked to recognize these devices in context (for example, identify which of the given lines contain alliteration). Uses "The Road Not Taken," by Frost; "Ode to the West Wind," by Shelley; and "I, Too, Sing America," by Hughes.
Depending on your students, this may be too difficult for 7th graders or too easy for 10th graders. Should be right on target for 8th or 9th - again, if you keep in mind it is designed to be a short, relatively simple assessment.
