This is a complete poetry unit designed to be used within the framework of reading workshop. You will receive ten lessons with all stages of workshop outlined (minilesson, active engagement, independent work, group/partner work, share). You will also receive three extension lessons, a homework project, labels for student poetry collections, a certificate to be used at the end of the unit, and a cover for a student poetry anthology.
The core lessons are based on reading and understanding poetry, and the extensions focus on deepening knowledge through writing and technology.
Students will learn:
Characteristics of poems (shape, sound)
Purposes of poetry (feeling)
Different types of poems (shape poems, acrostics, word clouds)
How to explore writing their own poetry
You will also receive a step by step guide to helping your students create word clouds using tagxedo, a great way to use technology to extend learning.
This unit makes teaching poetry to early elementary students simple and delightful. Because it is based on the reading workshop format, you will need a supply of poetry books for children to explore. Mentor texts are suggested, but you could also obtain the books you need by making a trip to the library. Everything else you need is included in this unit.
Teaching poetry has become one of my favorite units. Hopefully with this comprehensive unit, it will become one of your favorites as well!
