Many students start poetry units with extreme trepidation. They insist that they "don't like poetry." Some even fear it and feel that it is not accessible for them. I like trying to remove those fears and preconceived obstacles. When my students are completing our poetry unit, I think it's so important that they finish with a respect and appreciation for poetry. I want them to see that there is poetry for everyone. :) With this activity, students are exposed to three very different yet very accessible poems. They are required to respond to each and then justify selecting a favorite. With each poetry response assignment (note that this is #2 in the series), I gradually increase the "difficulty" of the poems. I have gotten some wonderful responses to this assignment, and I hope your students enjoy it as well.
