This Word doc is an adjustable document that features a rubric and step by step checklist of fourteen middle school and high school figurative language terms and and poetic devices.
Students will use or discover through reference and research materials, the meaning of these various terms. Then, they are to create an original poem using various cognitive levels. In the process of putting knowledge into practice by synthesizing and creating, students learn to diagram their understand by color or symbol coding each term in their poem with a key.
In the process, students not only become more familiar with terms, they learn overlapping; where an example can cover more than one term; for example "he was as huge as a giant". This shows hyperbole as well as metaphor.
