Poetry: Song Analysis Project
Product Description
What does Adele mean when she sings about setting fire to the rain? Those lyrics are symbolic and have a deeper meaning that the listener has to interpret. Most songs are jam packed with figurative language and symbolism. The fact is that songs are really poetry set to music. In this project, students will analyze the lyrics of a song the same way they would analyze a poem.

This project works great as a poetry summative assessment at the end of the unit. It allows student choice, which they will love, and serves as a quality assessment for the teacher, showing how well students can apply their poetry analysis skills to text they come across in every day life. This project will take 2-3 class periods to complete. It can be up to 6-7 class periods if students present their projects.

*Prior to completing this project, students should have an understanding of how to analyze a poem for figurative language, imagery, symbolism, tone, and theme. If you are starting from the beginning, see the FFASITT Poetry Analysis product, which introduces these key vocabulary concepts.
