Getting students to dig deep and think hard about poetry can be difficult. This product will make it a little bit easier!
The first part of this product is a handy poetry terms definition sheet. Use this sheet to review poetry words with your kids. Then, have them keep it handy as a reference tool throughout the year. I like to have my kids glue it right into their interactive notebooks.
The second part of this product is a poem analysis packet that can be used with just about any poem. Students are asked to choose a poem, or you may assign one. The students can then copy the poem by hand onto the poetry sheet. Or, if you have a printed copy, they can glue it on. Students are then asked to pick 3 of the 8 given tasks to complete.
Each task asks them to analyze a different aspect of the poem:
The tasks also vary in difficulty. If you wanted to differentiate this activity, you could assign students specific tasks based on their skill level. Students are held accountable for each task by recording their work on the given answer sheets.
I have used this as a group activity or as something for students to work on independently during guided reading or independent work time.
