This packet features those Common Core terms most often encountered when analyzing or writing poetry at the middle school level. This packet does not include terms such as, “caesura,” “dactyl,” or “elision,” which may appear in a high school or college poetry unit or course. Having all the terms in one packet allows students to create their own dictionary/study guide, which can then be hole-punched for easy inclusion in their binders. Students can work together in pairs or small groups, or individually, to define each term. There is an extra line provided for students to add an example (Sandy studies Saturday and Sunday.) or the title of a poem they have read or heard, as appropriate to the unit you are teaching.
