I created this activity with the idea that I wanted my students to really get into thinking deeper about the poems they were reading. It was originally used as a formative assessment, but I may use it as a summative in the future as it turned into a favorite right away.
This menu activity involves critical thinking and higher order skills analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, and creating poetry. This is a choice menu that allows students to select three of 9 projects to complete. Each activity is differentiated for gifted learners. Included in this activity are regular poetry and challenge poetry activities.
Unit includes the instructions for the unit, instructions for each of the menu item activities with a worksheet, a rubric, and regular and challenge poems to use alongside each activity.
All activities are editable and you could easily replace poems with ones that are appropriate for your students and preferences.
Poems that are included are free access on the web.
This easily can be used as either a formative or summative assessment.
All activities are editable.
Designed for middle school students, but can easily be adjusted for other grades.
It took my students a little over a week to get through these projects.
