The focus of this unit is to help students understand the power of poetry. There is a specific de-emphasis on poetry structure and an increased emphasis poetry as a form of argumentation. Although this is not explicit in the instruction, much of the lessons are geared around the idea that expresses ideas in meaningful and deliberate ways. By the end of the unit, students will write a 30 line spoken word poem that they will perform (competitively) in front of their class.
It is also worth noting that the focus is not on structure, but writing poetry in a way that they are comfortable with. I have found that by the end of the unit, students gravitate naturally towards their own deliberate structures.
