This 14 page Smartboard lesson helps students understand poetry and the different types and structures poems have. The first few slides helps students to think about and then outlines what is poetry and how it is different from other forms of writing. The next few slides include terms and then gives examples (using poems) on how those terms are used. Students can take notes for interactive notebooks on these terms (use pull down screen to cover up terms as you go through them one by one). The terms and examples include: imagery, stanza, verse, rhyme, and rhythm. Free verse is also explained and terms used that makes it poetry. These terms include: mood, figurative language, repetition, imagery, theme, symbolism, and alliteration. The last few slides explains and gives examples of different types of poems including: couplets, haiku, limericks, and cinquains. With each of these slides, students can write their own poetry to follow each type. This Smartboard lesson can be used as a poetry unit over a few days.
