This summative assessment project allows students an opportunity to choose how they will demonstrate their understanding of poetry. It works great for multiple learning styles and GATE differentiation. Ideally, this project will be done after an extensive poetry unit. The rubric references the use of the SIFTT method. This stands for Symbolism, Imagery, Figurative Language, Tone, Theme. They must include these elements in their own poem, or locate them in the poems that they analyze. The freedom afforded with this activity is ideal for a classroom that allows autonomy. It also includes a small slip at the bottom that requires them to indicate their choice, and to have a parent/guardian sign the slip to be returned.
