This poetry unit contains many examples of the follownig types of poetry: Couplet, Triplet, Quatrain, Cinquain, 5 W's, Diamante (Diamond), Clerihew, Haiku, Limerick, and Bio-Poem. Some of these examples were written by actual students of mine.
When I introduce a new type of poem, I present the page for that type on my presenter so all the students can see it. We read through the definitions and then all the examples. The students then each write a rough draft. (I have the students write more than one example. They have to write five couplets, three triplets, three quatrains, etc. That can be up to you.) When the rough drafts are complete, I go through them and help the students proofread for spelling errors. We also make sure the poem fits the description. After the rough drafts are corrected, students write their final copies and illustrate them. These are compiled into individual poetry books (students also design a cover) for them to take home.
Since I just spend one class period per week on this, it does take a couple of months to finish the unit.
