This poetry unit looks at understanding and analyzing poetry as well as writing poetry and writing about poetry for Grades 9-12. Twenty poems are included for lessons, with a choice of ten additional poems for students to select for writing about poetry. Approximately 70 documents make up the unit.
This unit looks at poetry through four windows: song, styles, story elements and relevance. It includes comprehension handouts and vocabulary PowerPoint presentations for thirteen words in the Ex-CELL format (literary style terms). Also included are writing poetry prompts and tests with rubrics and answer keys for each section. Peer conferencing with a rubric is included in writing about poetry, and the final assessment is a written analysis of a poem of their choice, also with rubric included.
These activities are scaffolded and differentiated: teacher decides on groupings for reading the text, analyzing the text, decides the extent to which the text will be explored. The whole class might read together or small groups might work together, presenting analyses of various poems. Teacher determines whether the tests will be taken open book or open notes, or not.
Duration depends on teacher objectives: usually one month, but teacher can determine time based on objectives. This is perfect for National Poetry Month or any poetry unit.
