I use this assessment with my grade 10 class, though it would work well with grade 11s and 12s as well.
The significant concept for this task is to look at how history, philosophy, art, music, and science are reflected in the poetry of the time the poetry was written. The students should understand how other poets have been influenced, and then consider how they as 21st century poets are influenced as well.
This task is made up of 6 steps:
1. Considering the influences around you (ex: technology)
2. Structural importance
3. How to write a poem – rough copy
4. Peer editing
5. Published copy of poem
6. 2-3 paragraph rationale (rationalize one’s style, form, theme, and poetic devices.
Finally, I have included the 3 rubrics for marking this task (content, organization and style &language).
**NOTE: This task is able to stand on its own, but was created with my Poetry 10 Unit PowerPoint that explores British Poetry from 1066 (Medieval Period) – the Present (Post Modernism).
