Teaching 8th grade Pre-AP English, I have found that most middle schoolers HATE poetry. I use this as a culminating activity before state testing as it reviews literary & grammar terms as well as introducing poetry. However, most of the "poems" are actually songs. I always tell my students that if they say they hate poetry they must be liars because they all love music. Once they realize poetry is a song without the music, they look at it in a totally different way. Most of the songs in this packet are produced by different artists, which really teaches tone and mood. In order to use this packet, you will need to be able to download and play these songs in your classroom. (I save them on a jump drive and play them through my computer.) It has completely changed how my students feel about poetry.
