Description

Poetry unit for National Poetry Month: An Introduction to U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove. Poetry, reading, writing, art...you can't go wrong with this unit. It has something for everyone! It is focused on grades 2-5 but could also be used for older students.

My intention for this lesson is multifaceted. It can be used as a supplement to a unit on poetry (for example, as part of April’s National Poetry Month celebration), as a complement to a study of women’s history (for example, as a part of March’s Women’s History Month), as an important part of a Black History Month unit, or as a stand alone classroom art project celebrating any or all of the above!

With the purchase of this lesson, you will get:

  • A biography on Rita Dove with questions to go along with it.
  • One of Rita's Poems, "The First Book with questions to go along with it.
  • Common Core Standards addressed in grades 2-5
  • Poetry writing prompts.
  • An art mosaic poster project with 2 variations (easy and more challenging).

It's all in here---reading, writing, poetry, and ART!!!

I am personal friends with Rita, and I have been given permission to use her photograph, poem, and biography.

There is a lot in this unit, and I have suggested a sequence in the lesson. But of course, feel free to change it to fit your specific classroom needs. Use it all or only parts of it. Use some parts this year and some parts next year! But no matter how you use it, I hope you and your students enjoy learning about the truly inspirational Rita Dove!
