This package has Writing Workshop lessons that are written out for a five day mini-study. These lessons could easily be stretched into two days per written out lesson.
There is a also a rubric included as well as confering starting stems for the students to scaffold them towards more meaningful responses to teacher questions.
Poetry paper that I have created is included in this package for running off for student poets. I find that by using the half sheet of paper there is a clear expectation that a poem is different than writing a narrative piece. I have found that this supports student differentiation in a visual sense.
The unit includes the poems, already typed out, for reference with the lessons or for reproduction. The poems are cited or have been written by me.
This packet also includes poems that have been written that students can listen to and draw their mental images. This work in inferencing is a great way to build comprehension and stamina for oral language and listening skills.
The unit also has a cover page that could be used for a bulletin board title in order to show off some of the illustrations for the mental images that are done by the poets.
For teachers who are interested in sending home a homework sheet to build the home-to-school connection during this week there is a sheet where an adult could read a poem and the child could do the mental imaging with their support. I have found great success with this homework activity and have gotten positive feedback on how this promotes quality time between adult and student.
There are also two 'jot books' that can be made for either boys or girls in order to have student authors have a place to 'jot' their ideas for poems. Students could also use this as an observation recording book to keep juicy words and visual ideas from a walk about.
