There are so many incredible contemporary poets for students to learn from and be mentored by. This unit helps to expose students to the poetry that's being written and published now. Here you will find a four week unit for teaching the research, reading, analyzing, and writing of contemporary poetry.
This download includes: a suggested four week calendar, easy-to-follow handouts, poetry vocabulary (stanza, metaphor, simile, enjambment, hyperbole, etc.), a few contemporary poems to analyze by Nikki Giovanni, Martin Espada, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Gwendolyn Brooks with analytical questions, a poetry scavenger hunt assignment, a student-centered contemporary poet research project utilizing information from The Poetry Foundation, Academy of American Poets, and Fishouse, an analytical writing assignment, a peer-education component called a Poetry Tea Party, poetry writing prompts, a project rubric, and a poem memorization assignment and rubric.
This download is perfect for the middle or high school teacher that is nervous about teaching poetry, or the educator who loves teaching poetry but is looking for fresh ideas.
This project was a semester favorite of my former 11th and 12th grade students. Students discovered writers they had never heard of, changed their relationship to poetry, and composed poems that they not only performed for the class, but also submitted to the school literary magazine.
