This is a handout to be used within a poetry unit. Students should already be familiar with poetic devices/terms, and ideally, this activity should be done in a 30-45 min period of time (not including whole-class discussion).
The idea is this: you post up to 7 poems (or you could split it for 2 days) in a few places around the room. Post the same 7 poems in three or more areas and divide the class up. Those students head to one of the areas to start silently reading the poems. As they read them, they make notes on their charts.
Once they are done with their chart, you can check it off, and hand each student a small post-it. They silently go up to their favorite poem and put the post-it on it. It's always fun to see which poem "wins."
After they are done, you can let them stay in those groupings and discuss a few of the poems before bringing it back to a whole-class discussion where students can share their favorite and why.
