Would you like a higher-order question that is text-dependent to use each day of the school year?
This product can be used in many ways; however, this is how I use it:
The poems can be read on Monday (I would read them each morning to do a close read). Remember that poetry is intended to be read aloud. Let different kids read it out loud to get different meanings and ways to express the words. Discuss and answer question 1 on Monday; question 2 on Tuesday…
Some poems have more than five questions to allow for substitutions or supplement a shorter discussion. Look ahead and see if you want to change the order you read the poems. Some of the poems need to be read consecutively because of the discussion. For example, "Fog" needs to be read before the "Fog" excerpt from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." There are no right or wrong answers, as long as the kids can support their answers with textual evidence. This is intended to support ELA Literature standards while getting students warmed up and confident for class and discussions.
There are 34 poems; one for each week of the school year!
