EXAMINE SCIENCE AND POINT OF VIEW THROUGH POETRY! With this unit, challenge students to use key scientific concepts while writing poetry. Students will begin by developing science and description word lists from the science prompts and pictures. Students then brainstorm possible poem narrators and how those narrators might present concepts differently using different points of view. Once the students' support graphic organizer is completed, students select the most effective narrator and point of view to develop their poems.
To support students' writing development, a "Sentence Starters" list is included in this resource and multiple pictures and prompts allow student choice. Suggestions for developing background knowledge on point of view and a foldable for poetic devices during revision are included in this resource.
This unit is a wonderful way to include interdisciplinary learning in your classroom and was developed specifically for a science classroom (though can be used in English.) After implementing this unit with a science and English classroom, I found that students were excited by the bridge between two disciplines and highly engaged. The science teacher I worked with literally said, "This is the first thing (a student) has done all year in my class."
