Looking for a unique and engaging way to get students to look at the difference between prose and poetry? Students use the images and ideas found in newspaper articles as inspiration for writing their own poem. Students are encouraged to use figurative language to help bring out the emotions of the incidents described in the newspaper articles. This activity is a creative way to get students thinking and talking about the differences between prose and poetry. I often get amazing results from my students who are "stuck for an idea" with their writing.
Includes two versions of the assignment - one for elementary / middle school and the other is more appropriate for high-school students (one of the articles deals with underage drinking) - choose the one that will work best for you.
