Poetry Writing! I Am What I Am Poetry Quilt

Writing poetry is one way to show individuality. What do you know about the students in your English classes? What do they know about each other? Use this poetry writing activity for community building in your classroom!

You will create a class community while students write “I Am What I Am” poems.

Students study poetry repetition in this lesson as they prepare for the state test assessments. They may need to know how to identify poetry terms, compare and contrast specific lines, and analyze the theme of the poem.

First, students will choose one of the seven quilt square designs and make it their own through their artwork. Colored pencil designs work best.

Next, students will discuss song lyrics and look at examples of repetition in poetry. They will begin creating their own poem choosing one of three options for formatting the repetition. They will type the poem in a word processing program and print it to fit inside the center of their individual quilt squares. Then, they will cut the poem out and glue it on the quilt square.

Students may want to share their poems during Author's Chair.

Class volunteers may put the quilt squares together into a large quilt by gluesticking or using glue dots to arrange all of the small squares into one large design.
