Students will write 10 of their own poems, one for each of the following: hyperbole, metaphor, personification, rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile, connotation, and antonym, and then they will create one poem that combines simile and metaphor. The directions are very explicit. Not only does this unit combine creative writing, poetry, and critical thinking skills, it also uses the figurative language that students must know. Could also be used for GATE enrichment - or not! I've used it for GATE and for general ed.
