TIME TO RAP! This activity involves the students creating a rap song that identifies a rhyme pattern. Through collaborating with a small team, they will write a poem that will be performed as a rap. This is a fun, engaging way to get students excited about poetry! I have done this lesson with students many times, and each time it's a hit!
If you have the technology, such as Movie Maker and a flip camera, you may want to have students create a "rap video"- this would help with accomplishing technology standards as well.
After teaching about rhyme poetry, you can play a rap song to introduce this task. I used the lyrics from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire" to get students excited and to realize that poetry and rap lyrics are truly one in the same!
