This is a great way to introduce students to the idea of memorization with a low level of commitment - each rubai is only 4 lines! It also shows the power of well-composed verse since each rubai in the selection has its own independent meaning and almost all include figurative language (metaphor, simile, or personification). This is a nice introduction to the concepts of memorized performance (which can later be applied to speeches or Poetry Out Loud!) and poetry analysis. I have used this in conjunction with the novel The Alchemist because it shares thematic ideas, but any novel about seizing the day and/or accepting death can work equally well.
