I found this was a great literary lesson for a level one class because it gives students the opportunity to explore some Spanish language poetry without needing to understand every word. My students were also interested in the bio of Lorca, especially the fact that he was gay and that his works were banned.
This is a bundle of two activities that I used in a Spanish 1 class. I presented a short biographical lesson on Federico García Lorca (not included) and then gave my students 2 activities to complete. Both are included in this bundle:
(1) Three poems by Lorca (Nocturnos de la ventana, Canción del Jinete, and La guitarra). Students use the poem sheet to answer a few basic questions about Lorca and then work in groups to "read" one poem of their choice and answer questions. Since this is a level 1 activity students used dictionaries and asked each other questions to complete the activity. I found they were able to understand quite a lot even though they were intimidated at first.
(2) A poem scavenger hunt. This activity asks some general questions about particular lines in the 3 poems included on the previous sheet. It asks students to speculate about Lorca's meaning. Check out the preview to see more!
