This checklist walks students through annotating a poem. This will work with all poems.
It starts by asking students to label the title, lines and stanzas. Then asks students to identify the speaker. It then moves into asking the students to find elements of figurative language and sound devices. Then the checklist asks students to explain the meaning and theme.
These are just some of the things the checklist asks for. I have used this in my classroom when I am introducing poetry and all the poetic elements. It helps give them guidance and helps them remember the things they should be looking for when trying to analyze a poem.
