This is a fun, and fairly low-stakes poetry project for junior English classes (Grades 7-9) that will engage learners as they select poetry that is meaningful to them.
This is a three day project with two main learning outcomes:
1/ This lesson has students uncover poetic devices in the music they listen to, understanding that poetry is everywhere, and finding meaning in those devices.
2/ This lesson has students really focus on reading instructions attentively and step-by-step. This project is not difficult, but is multi-stepped and requires students to spend some time reading and then doing. Emphasizing the importance of following instructions allows students to feel successful as they go through and check off each step. This teaches them how to approach a larger task, by dividing it up into bite-sized pieces.
Two RUBRICS are included here: one for the written product, and one for the low-stakes mini-oral presentation. The oral presentation also has students prepare in advance by creating a one-slide PowerPoint presentation.
There is a nine-page PDF DOCUMENT, which includes the assignment, handouts for students, and a fully-detailed exemplar, so you students know exactly what is expected of them.
Also included is an editable thirteen-slide POWERPOINT presentation, which goes through the requirements step-by-step, for both the written product as well as the oral presentation.
Students love music. Little do they know it is teeming with poetry. This low-anxiety poetry presentation allows students to share with each other their favourite songs all while uncovering the sheer multitude of poetic devices embedded in the lyrics. This will have any student questioning the time-old complaint, "Poetry sucks!" ;-)
