Description
Are you looking for a ready-to-teach poetry unit that also helps you bring Black History to your classroom? Then look no farther! This 5-day unit includes everything you need to teach students about Langston Hughes, one of our most important black poets. Along the way, students will learn about figurative language, poetic devices, theme and sequencing! Langston Hughes' poetry is very accessible to students, and the lesson plans include all the analysis for you - just print the student sheets, use the included discussion questions and instructional materials, and teach! This is perfect for Black History month (February), Poetry Month (April), or anytime!
The resource includes 6 Student Texts:
- a biography of Langston Hughes
- The Dream Keeper
- Youth
- Poem
- Shadows
- Mother to Son
All of these poems are in the public domain, so I was able to include them in the unit!
There are detailed lesson plans helping you know the teaching points, figurative language, poetic devices and theme of each poem. Included in the lesson plans are instructional materials like Class Brainstorm sheets and Partner Work Expectations
Throughout the unit, the activities require students to integrate information from the biography and the poems, raising the rigor and thinking level of the unit. You just need to print and teach for a high quality unit that students will love!
The resource includes 16 Student Sheets in addition to the texts:
- 5 Poem Analysis Sheets - 1 for each poem
- a 2-page biography sequencing activity
- 2 pages of Text Dependent Questions
- Imagery in Youth Student Sheet
- Similes about the Sun Student Sheet
- a Writing Assignment
- a 3-page Poetry Glossary
- a Langston Hughes Poetry Journal cover
And of course, I've included the Answer Keys for everything!
