This is a thirty page document contains materials meant to be used to teach Modernism at the high school level. The unit is set around the literary movement Modernism. In my class, this unit is in between the unit on Transcendentalism and the unit on "The Great Gatsby," so the contents are catered to that pedagogical approach, but it is not necessary for the successful execution of the unit.
The document contains a copy of the poems, a copy of the poems with direct annotations from me, an 11th grade English teacher. The annotations include how to specifically facilitate meaningful discussion when analyzing the poems, examples of activities I have my students complete when studying them, and various commentary on what goes over well and not-so-well with the students.
In addition to the commentary on the poems, the materials also include a written test, an example of a summative project I have students complete, and a copy of the slides I use as an introduction to the unit. The Power Point presentation is free to download and can be located with my other material.
I have taught this unit many times, so it now works like a well-oiled machine because I have honed my teaching skills in the context of this unit over the years. I hope you find my comments helpful as you embark on teaching these difficult topics!
