7th Grade English/Language Arts Common Core Lesson Plan

A lesson plan is extremely useful as it can serve as a guide and resource, reflecting our goals for our students.

Let this lesson be your guide for managing the learning environment as it helps you teach the Common Core standard RL.7.6. This lesson includes the following:

*The Learning Target (I CAN statement): The learning target (I CAN statement) is what students should know by the end of the lesson.
*The Importance of the Lesson: An explanation of why students should learn this specific lesson.
*Activate Prior Knowledge: Tap into what students already know.
*Concept Development: Define what will be taught before it's taught (the concepts within the learning target).
*Skill Development: The Teacher is the expert. The Teacher models and explains, demonstrating the skill students need to learn.
*Guided Practice: This will provide practice and immediate feedback to check to see if students need additional teaching and/or comprehend what was just taught before releasing them to Independent Practice. You will continue to model steps and procedures from Develop the Skill throughout Guided Practice. The same Anchor Chart and Step Chart used during Develop the Skill is now used for Guided. There is not a script included for Guided Practice.
*Closure of Lesson: A final checking for understanding. Ask yourself: Did the students master the learning target (I CAN statement), so they can be released to Independent Practice?
*Throughout the lesson, there are...
-Questions for Checking for Understanding (CFU), so you know
your students are learning.
-Active Student Participation Strategy (ASPS) suggestions to
increase and maintain active engagement.
-Randomizing ideas
*Notes section
*Anchor Chart
*Step Chart
*Develop the Skill, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice story excerpts and worksheets
*Story excerpts include Anne of Green Gables, Dracula, The Good Reader and The Thunderstorm (McGuffey Reader), The Scarlet Pimpernel, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

As educators know classrooms are dynamic, so consider this lesson as a roadmap or navigator in your teaching. Please feel free to adjust this lesson as you see fit for the needs of your students. Check out my free lesson L.7.4a as the format for this lesson is similar to that lesson. This lesson can be adapted for 6th and 8th grade as well.
