This lesson allows students to gain an understanding of their environment through art history and science! I would recommend teaching this lesson in the fall so that students can observe their environment while painting.
For this lesson, I read the students the book 'Why leaves Change Colors' and we talk as a class what causes the leaves to change color in the fall. Then we look at George Seurat's painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte ' and discuss the technique of pointillism and optical blending. After students have an understanding of both key concepts we paint our own fall tress!
Along with every lesson, on the last page, I include a sheet of handouts that describe the lesson along with the main concepts that were taught to the students. This sheet can be cut into strips, one for each student, and stapled onto their projects to be sent home for parents reading! (click thumbnail to preview handout slips)
