Confession: I am an obsessively organized person. In order for me to function, I need to have every detail of my teaching plan mapped out. So at the beginning of the year, I put everything on the calendar: units, lessons, assignments, tests. I realize that things come up, plans need to be rearranged, but this helps me stay on a track with the learning goals that I want my students to reach.
Once I have everything on my calendar, I want my students to have the chance to put those major events on their own calendars. In comes this points and due dates handout. I fill it in, provide a copy to my students, and then take one of my first class periods with them to fill it in their planners. I like to color code these things with them: blue for writing assignments, green for reading assignments, red for tests, etc. However, you don't have to do all that (that's my OCD at work).
I've included an empty points/due dates page + two samples that I used (one for sixth and one for seventh language arts).
