In this activity, students are required to collect gases from an alka-seltzer tablet.
The gases can't be released to the atmosphere AND students should be able to quantify the gas collected. They are provided very little instruction. They are required to work together and brainstorm. This is a very engaging activity that can consume an entire period. It can be used to illustrate the concept of an open vs. closed system as discussed in earth science, introduce the names and uses of basic lab equipment, as a review and practice of metric conversion and concepts (1 mL = 1 cubic centimeter) or simply to practice team building and brainstorming.
Most items are basic lab supplies. You will need to cut and assemble the tubing/pipette. Collecting the materials is time consuming but totally worth it!
