This sorting game is a great way for students to learn to recognize Arctic/Polar Animals and Non-Arctic/Polar Animals! I like to teach a unit on animals and I have my students complete this activity by sorting pictures of different animals by deciding if they are animals that live in the arctic, or don’t live in the arctic. Prior to the activity, we talk about different types of animal habitats. As a whole group, we sort the animals, and then I set it out as a science center activity. I have included a color version and a black and white version, which can be easily printed and colored to look like the color version, as well as a recording sheet to hold your students accountable for their work. There are two sorting mats: one for arctic animals and another for animals that don’t live in the arctic. There are also 30 pictures of different animals. 15 polar animals: arctic fox, arctic hare, arctic wolf, beluga whale, dall sheep, moose, narwhal, orca whale, penguin, polar bear, puffin, reindeer, seal, snowy owl, and walrus. 15 non-polar animals: alligator, cow, dolphin, elephant, fox, giraffe, hippo, jellyfish, kangaroo, lion, monkey, octopus, panda, tiger, and zebra. I hope you and your students enjoy this sorting game!
