I created this unit for a grade 7 Science class of mixed abilities. Our textbook for this unit is quite dull, so this unit plan breaks away from the text and addresses as many of the concepts as possible by studying a specific animal that would be of high interest level. The class I was teaching when this unit was originally created had several students with challenging behavior and attention issues; therefore this unit is designed to be as engaging and as accessible as possible to minimize disruption.
- 12 lessons (depending on the length of your classes, could be stretched over a larger number of periods)
- many links to articles and videos to supplement your teaching
- 7 activity sheets
- 1 demonstration experiment
- 1 assignment & rubric
- 1 review crossword
- 1 test
I have a Smartboard in my classroom, so I tend to include lots of links to articles and video clips in my plans. While I found the documentaries referenced online, they are also available on DVD (links provided). I loaded the articles on the Smartboard to share with my class, but they could be just as easily printed & copied.
This mini-unit addresses all of the overall expectations for the Grade 7 Life Systems strand of the Ontario Curriculum, as well as most of the specific expectations. I am sure that with a small amount of tweaking it would meet expectations for other provinces/states equally well.
