”Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do You Hear?” by Bill Martin is one of my Y5s all-time favorite stories.
With that in mind, I designed this “Polar Bear What Do You Hear?” story wheel craftivity, which is a quick, easy & fun way to assess comprehension and practice the sequencing and retelling a story standards.
- "Absolutely love this! Awesome retell activity."
- "Easy to use. Fun and provides hands-on learning."
- "My students loved these resources and were very engaged."
There are full color patterns to use for centers, plus a black and white pattern so your students can make their own.
When everyone is done with their story wheel, have children pick a partner, and take turns retelling the story.
We sometimes do this with our reading buddies.
As a comprehension-assessment tool, and for fine motor practice, another option is to make the “Polar Bear Pie Puzzles”.
As with the story wheel, I’ve also included colorful patterns for a center and BW templates so students can color, cut and arrange their own.
There are 5 different puzzle-base options.
(See PREVIEW for samples.)
There's also a writing prompt worksheet, where students write what happened in the story, which will further check comprehension and reinforce chronological writing.
If you’re studying fractions, be sure and take a teachable moment to review that vocabulary and information.
These activities appeal to a variety of ages & abilities.
- "Great activity for my preschool groups! They loved the story wheel."
- "I used this with my kindergarten and 1st grade students. They really enjoyed this activity!"
- "Love the versatility of this activity!"
I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping all the sounds you hear in school are happy ones, filled with giggles galore.
