This is a large unit put together by 2 different teachers with a focus on both literacy and math.
There are 12 activities including 5 literacy and 7 math. The theme surrounds the classic story of The Polar Express. Many of the activities are leveled for grades kindergarten - 2nd grade.
Vocab Game— (Use word cards—Set I or Set II and game board) Students will determine who goes first according to your classroom policy. Word Cards are placed upside down. First child rolls the dice, chooses a card and uses that word correctly in a sentence. If they are able to use it correctly in a sentence then they may move their game marker the number of spaces rolled on the dice. If they are not able to use it in a sentence, then they stay in their spot. The first person to reach Santa wins.
ABC Order—( Use word cards—Set I or Set II and the ABC order sheet). Students should put the word cards in order with a partner. Then they can record these on their ABC Order sheet. These activities do not have to be done together but that is your choice.
Word Scramble—(Use Set I or Set II) - Students cut out the unscrambled vocab words on the bottom of the paper and glue them next to the scrambled words.
Sequencing—(Use Set I or Set II) depending on grade level. Students will sequence the story of the Polar Express using words or pictures.
Roll and Write—Students will need one dice for this activity. Students will write a specific word depending on what number they roll.
