These 5 math story problems (Work the Words, or, WtW) are based on The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. Each is labeled with both TEKS and Common Core State Standards and formatted in a problem-solving template called UPS✔ (Understand, Plan, Solve, Check). They provide challenging and rigorous practice in solving math problems. A UPS✔ bookmark for students is included which explains the problem-solving model.
Included for instructional purposes is a powerpoint presentation with a slide for each problem with themed color illustrations. The Notes section of each slide includes the problem-solving strategy for that problem (e.g., draw a picture, use objects, etc.), the topic of the problem, the TEKS and CCSS, and the answer to the problem. Each problem is also presented on a UPS✔ template for printing and solving. The problems can be used for individuals, for collaborative pairs/groups or in a math station.
