My students LOVE playing pretend. One moment they’re dinosaurs searching for something to eat, and then the next minute they’re firefighters rescuing a cat stuck in a tree. Naturally, my students were thrilled when I invited them to pretend that they were applying to become police officers. They were positively giddy when I showed them the badges they’d get to wear once they completed their applications.
After posting the Help Wanted ad, we began researching police officers. Using the “Can, Have, Are Organizer” helped us keep track of our learning and focus on the qualities and responsibilities of police officers. Next, students used the graphic organizers to plan their paragraphs. After students edited and revised their work, they wrote their final copies on the lined paper. Finally, they completed the police officer craftivities and attached them to the top of their writing. Their adorable little police officers and well-crafted paragraphs were a huge hit!
Perhaps the best part of all, was handing each kiddo a certificate and a shiny police badge to wear proudly. I hope that your students have as much fun with this project as mine did.
