In this assignment, the teacher will show students political commercials, and the class will discuss them and evaluate their effectiveness. This is a great way to get students interested in how elections work, and I like to give them a bit of history as we do this. I think it is important to show them varied approaches, how party platforms influence what candidates focus on, and more.
The commercials I show are available on YouTube, and will give them insight into how political discourse has changed in America. I will show others, but these will get you started and show a great deal of diversity in terms of style:
-"I Like Ike" 1952 (Eisenhower)
-"Daisy" 1964 (LBJ)
-"The Change is Coming" 1992 (Clinton)
-"Tough on Defense" 1960 (Nixon)
-"Gerald Ford on Taxes" 1976
-"Read My Plan" 2012 (Obama)
-"Conviction or Compromise" 2012 (Paul)
-"New Generation" 2016 (Cruz)
With the class, ask questions and discuss each, and have students finish their write-ups for homework. I will also let them do Think-Pair-Share and small groups for this.
