Political Cartoons inspire creativity and critical thinking and are a great way to incorporate art into your social studies lessons. Students can use this graphic organizer to analyze political cartoons as well as to create their own. Simply begin by looking at a few kid friendly political cartoons (a google search will bring up plenty) and asking students to record the words and images they see. Next, work as a class to determine the meaning behind the words and images (a good lesson in symbolism as well). After this students can determine the overall message of the cartoon. Reverse this procedure for students to create their own political cartoons!
