This activity can be done just for political cartoons or can be combined to be a culminating activity in the study of Andrew Jackson's presidency. Students are given an assignment to find a current political cartoon of their own choosing and bring it to class. Then together we view a PowerPoint presentation of current and older political cartoons featuring Jackson (included) and discuss their meaning. We do a written cartoon analysis on a couple cartoons as well (included). Then I give them the assignment to create their own 2 cartoons about Andrew Jackson's presidency (included) after we brainstorm as a group some ideas. This is easily adapted to exclude Andrew Jackson or to use an entirely different president or historical figure. I change the PPT each year to include more relevant and timely cartoons. Some on 9/11 or a bad economy are timeless and easy for students to understand.
