Political Correctness

Political Correctness
Product Description
This lesson discusses the idea of political correctness by tracking the history of the term and its implementation in the United States. It highlights the fallacy of arguing that there could ever be one “correct” interpretation, particularly in democratic societies. It cites numerous studies and articles which seem to indicate that despite the move towards political correctness, little has changed in the overall dynamic of discrimination, injustice and economic inequality. It notes numerous historical examples where the idea of a correct belief or mode of thinking has led to tragedy, including Soviet use of psychiatric hospitals to ‘cure’ the politically incorrect. It also looks at a report from the American Association of University Professors on what political correctness has done to silence differing opinions. The lesson challenges students to think and critically analyze the situation and hopefully reach their own informed conclusions. The teacher is free to modify the lesson in any manner that facilitates its use in the classroom. (This product has been very successfully classroom tested)
