John Brown was one of the most outspoken Abolitionists in the United States. He was a radical and opposed slavery by whatever means possible including violence. He was caught up in the Kansas Nebraska statehood issues and was part of the "Bleeding Kansas" movement as an instigator.

He lead a raid on Harper's Ferry was caught, tried, convicted and hanged for this effort. Some said he was insane.
