Before you delve deep into the 2 party system, check out these activities that familiarize your students with the political spectrum and 2 party system. These activities are great to do in class, but an be given as supplemental work or homework!
Activity 1: Read political spectrum definitions (Word). Students should decide where they may "live" on the spectrum. I included POLITICAL SPECTRUM letters in MTF Jumpin Jack if you want to create a visual for the students in your classroom. See the thumbnail picture!
Activity 2: Analyze political cartoons (2 included) with an analysis sheet. Both in Word for editing and PDF. Check out my HOW TO to see how I utilize in my class.
Activity 3: Navigation worksheet for website: isidewith.com both in Word for editing and PDF. I am using this in class so I could help address researching issues with kids. This would also work as a homework assignment. ** I gave this to 9th graders and it took them about 40 minutes to finish and they needed some guidance with the quiz questions (Common questions: What is nuclear energy? What is affirmative action?)
BONUS activity: A worksheet asking students to discuss the media and their importance in our society and political process. Students will discuss criteria for what makes a story newsworthy and then research the internet for stories they do not/ and do fit their criteria. Comes with a teacher example!!
