This project was designed to make students think about how difficult it is to try to come up with the perfect energy source for our world. Their task is to attempt to create an entirely "clean" or "green" environment with the smallest amount of pollution at the lowest cost possible, and then write a letter to convince people to move to their new city. I usually use this activity at the end of the Science and the Environment unit to re-cap everything we discussed about pollution and energy consumption.
It addresses not only science standards, but reinforces writing skills, and promotes creative thinking and problem solving skills.
The file includes the task, the writing prompt, a 4 point rubric to assess the writing, and teaching notes.
This is an ideal project for students with access to iPads/computers, but can be easily adapted to students without those resources.
